Aftercare
Congrats on your new tattoo! Here are two ways to navigate the healing process, depending on the method used.
Option 1: Healing with Second Skin (Medical Bandage like Dermshield or Saniderm)
This method is often preferred for a "set it and forget it" approach during the first few days.
• Initial Wear: Leave the original bandage on for 24 hours-48 hours. It is normal to see some fluid (ink and plasma) build up underneath; this is called an "ink sack."
• Removal: After 24-48 hours, gently peel the bandage back under warm, running water. Pulling it slowly and parallel to the skin helps prevent irritation.
• Cleanse: Once removed, wash the area with unscented, antibacterial soap using only your clean fingertips. Pat dry with a fresh paper towel.
• Second Application (Optional): If provided with a second piece, apply it to the clean, dry skin and leave it on for an additional 3 to 5 days.
• Final Removal & Moisturize: After the final removal, keep the tattoo clean and apply a very thin layer of unscented, water-based lotion 2–3 times a day until the skin is fully healed.
Option 2: Traditional Healing (No Second Skin)
This is the classic method if you prefer to let the tattoo breathe or have sensitive skin.
• The First Wash: Keep the initial shop bandage on for 2 to 4 hours. Once home, remove it and wash the tattoo immediately with warm water and unscented, antibacterial soap.
• Air Dry: Pat the area dry with a clean paper towel and let it air out for about 15 minutes before applying any product.
• Ointment Phase (Days 1–3): Apply a very thin layer of a healing ointment (like Aquaphor) twice a day. The tattoo should look slightly shiny, not greasy or "suffocated."
• Lotion Phase (Days 4+): Once the tattoo begins to peel or flake (like a sunburn), switch to a fragrance-free, plain white lotion.
• Hands Off: Avoid picking or scratching any scabs or flakes, as this can pull the ink out of the skin.
Universal Golden Rules
• No Submerging: Avoid baths, hot tubs, or swimming for at least 2 to 3 weeks. Showers are perfectly fine!
• Sun Protection: Keep the tattoo out of direct sunlight during the healing process. Once fully healed, always use SPF 30 or higher to prevent fading.
• Cleanliness: Always wash your hands before touching your healing tattoo, and try to wear loose-fitting clothing over the area.
